Hy-Vee Coming Soon to Columbia Heights!

Hy-Vee Development Update
Hy-Vee grocery store is coming to Columbia Heights! Last year, the City Council approved plans for the renovation of the Central Valu Center, located at 4300 Central Avenue. The renovations include the conversion of the former Rainbow Foods and Slumberland Clearance Center spaces into a 90,000-plus square foot Hy-Vee grocery store. In addition to this, the entire shopping center will be re-faced and will receive new signage and the parking lot and adjacent retaining wall will be completely reconstructed. Approved plans for the grocery store can be viewed here.

Hy-Vee closed on this property late last year, and is now the owner of the Central Valu Center (the name will change once remodeling commences). As a component of this project, Hy-Vee is also constructing a convenience store and gas station, as well as an attached Starbuck’s Coffee, at the northeast corner of Central and 47th Avenues. Approved plans for the convenience store/gas station can be viewed here.

Due to the age and condition of the Central Valu Center, extensive environmental remediation work must take place as part of the remodeling project. Hy-Vee is moving forward with this work, and intends to begin construction later this year.

Hy-Vee is an employee-owned company, founded in 1930 in Beaconsfield, Iowa. Today, Hy-Vee employees over 82,000 people across eight Midwestern states. Hy-Vee Columbia Heights will employ approximately 400-500 people, and will feature a food court and a full-service bar and grill. The City is excited about this upcoming development, and looks forward to its grand opening in 2018!
