In an effort to create a community-informed solution to the ever-increasing correlation between affordable housing and hunger, Reuter Walton Development and Southern Anoka Community Assistance (SACA) has partnered with the City of Columbia Heights to create a horizontal mixed-use development that includes an affordable housing development and a food shelf. The project aims to provide pathways to prosperity for cost-burdened individuals and families in this census tract and the community of Columbia Heights and Southern Anoka County.

Reuter-Walton Development’s construction project will create a 62—unit apartment building with rents that are 100% affordable at 60% of area median income (AMI) rents. The building will be 4-stories tall with one level of underground parking for the residents. It will include a playground, fitness center, community space, business offices, package room, and on-site management. With the growing need for affordable housing in the Columbia Heights area, this project provides a fresh and modern housing option for the community. This part of the project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2023.

Within the same land plot, Southern Anoka Community Assistance (SACA) is building a new facility to become a one-stop-shop model for basic needs, hunger relief, and beyond in Anoka County. This initiative was influenced by a skyrocketing demand for food shelf services since March 2020 due to COVID-19. Last year, SACA provided over 804,000 pounds of food to 45,000 individuals. Currently, SACA sees at least 1-3 new participants daily, and participants who haven't visited in 3 to 5 years are returning for assistance. SACA's ability to meet the growing needs of the community has been limited by the confines of its current building, which is why they are building a larger, updated facility. This new space will allow SACA to double the number of participants served, increase the amount of food provided, add more staff and volunteer capacity, expand program services, and create a technology center. This project will also advance racial equity goals by ensuring diverse voices are represented in the planning of this endeavor. It will also provide job opportunities, social services, and access to fresh, healthy food to low-income community members.
