Mayor and Commissioner Candidate Forum is July 18

Mayor and Commissioner Candidate Forum to be Held July 18 at City Hall
A “Meet the Candidates” forum for the candidates running in the Columbia Heights mayoral and District 4 Anoka County commissioner primaries will be held July 18, 7 to 9:30 pm, in the Columbia Heights City Hall Council Chambers.

The mayoral candidate portion of the evening will be 90 minutes followed immediately by a 60-minute commissioner forum. The event will be co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters ABC and HeightsNEXT. A moderator will be provided by the League of Women Voters.

The event is open to the public.

“It is our purpose to provide the voters of Columbia Heights with an opportunity to hear the candidates discuss the issues of importance to them in this primary election,” stated the League of Women Voters ABC in an invitation letter to the candidates.

A second forum for the two mayoral and commissioner primary winners and the four City Council candidates will be held Sept 20.

A Busy Primary Awaits Aug 14
This filing season, six candidates filed for mayor, and four filed for City Council.

A primary will be held Aug 14 for the mayoral and District 4 Anoka County race to narrow both races down to two candidates each for the general election. There will not be a primary for the Columbia Heights City Council race.

A primary is triggered when more than twice the number of candidates file than there are open seats. For example, because there is only one open seat for mayor, it takes at least three candidates to trigger a primary. Since there are two seats open for City Council, it would take at least five candidates to file to require a primary.

For the general election Nov 6, the top two vote getters in the City Council race will win a seat. All seats in the City Council are at-large.
Absentee voting starts June 29.

Columbia Heights needs election judges for both the Aug 14 primary and the Nov 6 general elections. Election judges from a variety of party affiliations are needed (for more information or to apply, contact the Columbia Heights City Clerk at 763-706-3611).
