Finance Department Earns Highest Honor in Financial Reporting for 27 Years Straight
For the 27th year, the City of Columbia Heights finance department has won a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting in North America.

The finance department has won this award every year since 1991, which means that, based on the assessment of a GFOA panel of impartial evaluators, the department has gone above and beyond the standard expectations for financial reporting for almost three decades straight.

According to the GFOA, the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program was established in 1945 to encourage and assist state and local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles to prepare comprehensive annual financial reports that evidence the spirit of transparency and full disclosure.

Winning this award is gratifying, said Joseph Kloiber, finance director. It also signifies to outside agencies and stakeholders that the City of Columbia Heights, its City manager and City Council value high quality and reliable financial reporting and effective financial management practices.

The finance department won the award specifically for the 2017 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, which can be viewed here. Jackie Zillmer, assistant finance director, accepted the award at a recent City Council meeting.
