Sustainability Commission Established, Applications Open

The City of Columbia Heights is looking for volunteers to join the newly formed Columbia Heights Sustainability Commission. The commission will operate as an official advisory body to the City Council. Members will recommend and plan improvements and initiatives related to sustainability and advise the City Council on how to best operate in an environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable manner within the City. There are nine open seats on the new commission. The deadline to apply is June 16, with interviews scheduled for the end of June. Find an application here.

The creation of the Sustainability Commission coincides with the council's adoption of six new core strategies and strategic objectives, which state that a sustainable City should:
  • Make plans with the next seven generations in mind
  • Take an open-minded approach and evolve with climate-friendly and green best practices
  • Be built to last
  • Maintain and implement a long-term Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for buildings
  • Seek energy-efficient solutions
  • Conserve and preserve - not just the environment and climate but also knowledge, institutional wisdom, and culture
  • Revise City codes to be geared toward the above values
  • Implement clear messaging and strong education
The Sustainability Commission will replace the City's Traffic Commission. Apply now! Email completed applications to sion@columbiaheightsmn.gov by June 16.
