CHPD and Canvas Health Featured in National Best Practices Publication

The Columbia Heights Police Department's co-response program with Canvas Health was recently featured in a Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) publication. PERF, a leading police research and policy organization, published a report last month looking at promising police response models for calls involving people in mental or behavioral health crisis. The report aims to help agencies and communities think through what kind of program may help them respond to this type of call.

PERF's research focuses on three main categories of crisis-response models, one of them being co-response programs. The success of the department's co-response program is one of the models featured in a case study in the report. The program was launched in 2021 and provides a social worker that is available to help police respond to mental health related calls. The report highlights a survey of Columbia Heights Police Officers in which all 26 respondents said the embedded social worker program added value to the department and three-quarters said it made their job easier and reduced the number of times they needed to use force to resolve calls.
